Little house on the Tokyo
Friday, December 7th, 2007I’ve just confirmed my reservation of my future place to live. There isn’t much to say about it, except that it’s small. And I don’t mean, student dorm small like in Amsterdam, no I mean truly Small with a capital S. The size of my room is 3 tatami (for the non Japan geeks: 5 m2). I will share the appartment with not 1, not 2, but 9 people! So that will be a bit of getting used to.
Even so, I found my place to live! This is what it looks like on the outside:

Its name is Hatagaya guesthouse and it is situated approximately 10 minutes away from Shinjuku station. Whether that’s a good thing or not I don’t know yet, but I will of course keep you posted!
flashCBC
Sunday, December 2nd, 2007In case you are interested in my Master Thesis, titled flashCBC flash crowd mitigation for dynamic web sites, I’ve put it online for your reading pleasure.
Abstract:
Web sites are constantly threatened by sudden surges in traffic, also known as flash crowds. Current systems deal with flash crowds by utilizing replication or edge computing to distribute the load between multiple servers. However, when dealing with dynamic websites, the database part of the system quickly becomes the bottleneck. As a result, current systems are unsuitable when applied to dynamic websites. In this thesis, we introduce flashCBC, a content-blind query result caching middleware designed to unburden the database server during a flash crowd.
